This paper gathers field notes and studio conversations around textile practices that treat material as a form of knowledge.
Method
Studio visits, dye-log analysis and interviews across three workshops, conducted between 2024 and 2026.
Findings
Makers consistently describe material decisions as cognitive: the cloth 'tells them' what it needs. We treat this not as metaphor but as situated, embodied expertise.
The cloth tells you what it needs; the skill is in listening.
